Advance booking needed:

Many people are booking now for 1997. Independent travelers should book 4 - 12 months in advance. Groups need to make reservations 12 - 20 months in advance. The group size is usually about 15 people. Some people like to combine their tour with the beautiful scenery of Banff or the ice fields near Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. Others combine their trip with a visit to Vancouver and Victoria Island.

Accommodations:

Sometimes ecotours use deluxe accommodations. In Winnipeg a 5-star hotel is used, and in Churchill, a 3-4 star hotel is used, which is the best available.

Sometimes, ecotourists stay at the popular White Whale Lodge, however, which is a rustic but cozy wooden cabin. This cabin has a colorful history: it was a trading post at the turn of the century, a brothel in 1920s, a movie setting in the 1960's, and now a naturalist lodge where visitors enjoy watching birds, polar bears, northern lights, and Beluga whales. Sleeping arrangements are bunkhouse style and heating is by propane and wood stove. Do you always need a fancy hotel when you travel in nature?
